william earned his doctorate at 15 as a child prodigy. his mother never paid mind to his studies, and his father never disciplined him, much less stayed home for his family. in spite of this, william made it his goal to make a name for himself, determined to prove that his intellect was worth more than the neglect he had grown accustomed to.
he devoted himself to his work, seeking recognition and achievement in a world where he had never quite received the attention he craved. seeing william's genius, umbrella employed him and offered the executive training program at a laboratory in Arklay County under the oversight of Dr. James Marcus.

on his first day, along with albert wesker, the two were introduced to lisa trevor, whom had been a test subject at arklay since 1967. here, birkin studied the splicing of the experimental tyrant virus, leading into the development of a new strain that kept humans alive in an aggressive, brain damaged state.in july of 1981, umbrella employed a new child prodigy named dr. alexia ashford as senior virologist, the granddaughter of the umbrella co-founder dr. edward ashford. she was 10 years old.
birkin's ego was severely damaged by this. determined to prove himself, and with research stalled since 1978, he took in the new problem of 10% of the population being immune to the t-virus. He developed Bio Organic Weaponry (B.O.W.), including Hunter α, created by combining reptilian DNA with a fertilized human egg. In 1983, Dr. Ashford’s death was announced, and Birkin continued his research. He married fellow researcher Annette in 1982, and they had a daughter, Sherry, in 1986, although both prioritized their careers over their marriage.By 1988, Birkin faced difficulties developing the Tyrant because the t-Virus often caused severe brain damage. He developed a strain that reduced this damage, but it required extremely rare genetic traits. When Umbrella ordered the assassination of Dr. Marcus, Birkin helped confiscate his research, strengthening his own work on the t-Virus.Birkin also experimented with NE-α parasites to overcome the intelligence limitations of B.O.W.s. He tested one on Lisa Trevor, whose body destroyed the parasite and incorporated its DNA, causing further mutations. This discovery revealed the potential for creating a superior human subspecies and inspired Birkin to develop the G-Virus, also known as Golgotha.In 1991, Umbrella established the NEST laboratory, where Birkin led the project alongside Annette and other researchers.

By 1998, Birkin had become suspicious that Umbrella would never grant him the executive position he wanted. After the t-Virus outbreak in the Arklay Mountains, he secretly negotiated with the U.S. military to sell them the G-Virus in exchange for protection for himself and his family. He also sabotaged Umbrella facilities, spreading infections and disrupting operations. These actions alarmed Umbrella, which feared losing control of Birkin and his valuable research.
